Usenet = Usable?

Personally, I've been using Apps like DC++, LimeWire, Transmission (torrents), and before those KaZaa to download 'certain things' from the web. All of these are Peer-2-Peer sharing Apps and it has been working great for me so far. But every now and then somebody is telling me that nothing beats Usenet.

So about every time I hear this I try out some kind of newsreader. I've tried Outlook (Express), Entourage, Unison and quite a few more. All of these readers display loads of sections and groups and every group has thousands of messages and files in them. But opening a group maybe reveals a couple of messages, and of course they're far from being usable ones.

So the point where I always get stuck is: How do I find a file???. I did find a couple of sites that indexed all of these Usenet messages and binaries and I could find useful files but again: How do I download these!?
edit: Yes I did finally figure out I could generate *.nzb files and open them with a Newsreader. But not a single file could be downloaded by any of the readers ...

I know I'm probably the only one that has tried it and doesn't get it. But still no-one, not even Google, has been able to tell me how this thing works.
Well for now I'll just stick to torrents and LimeWire ... until someone tells me about Usenet.
